Safety Tips for Tourists

Remember that tourists in any country can become targets. In order to make your visit a happy and memorable one, the following precautions should be taken:

At the airport

  • Be on the alert for handbag snatchers and pickpockets or suspicious looking persons.
  • If you feel uncomfortable with people around you go to the nearest security office.
  • Always keep your luggage where you can see it.
  • Make sure that your bags luggage have tags.
In the car
  • Always know where you are going.
  • Fasten your seat belt, lock your doors, and only leave your windows open about 5 cm in slow or stop and go traffic.
  • Do not use your mobile phone while driving, unless you have a hands free kit.
  • Never display your valuables in the car e.g. handbags, clothes, mobil phones, etc. Lock them in the boot of your car.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when you stop at a robot (traffic light) or stop in the street.
On the street
  • Do not publicize your valuables, e.g. jewellery, camera, etc.
  • Be on the alert for handbag snatchers and pickpockets or suspicious looking persons. 
  • Avoid walking at night in deserted areas and stay in well lit, populated areas.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and know where you are going.
  • Get advice from your accommodation establishment prior to embarking on foot.
  • If you need any information, a policeman or officer will be glad to assist you.
  • Make sure your travel insurance covers your valuables.
  • Use credit cards or if not possible, please carry only a small amounts of cash.
On the beach
  • Swim at beaches manned by lifeguards.
  • Swim between the beacons.
  • Obey instructions of lifeguards.
  • If encountering difficulties in the sea, raise one hand above your head.
  • Avoid mixing alcohol and swimming.
  • When you swim consider to ask your neighbour to keep an eye on your belongings or leave them in a locker.
  • Do not bring valuables to the beach.
  • Do not take glass bottles to the beach.
  • Please, no naked or topless swimming or sun bathing unless in designated areas. 
  • Use adequate sun protection cream.
At your accommodation establishment
  • Any valuables should be locked away in a safe place. 
  • Keep your room locked whether you're in or out.
  • If someone knocks, check who it is before opening the door.
  • Do not leave your luggage unattended, especially during check in / check out procedures.
General advice
  • Make sure your travel insurance covers your valuables.
  • Make sure that the number of your travellers cheques are on your receipt and that this is kept in a safe place (not with your cheques!). 
  • Check expiry date of credit cards - Master/Visa. 
  • Have a photocopy of your passport / flight ticket and other important documents with you but keep it separate from your original documents in case you lose them.
  • It is always advisable to take out traveller's medical insurance.
