Angola mainly consists of a large central plateau that falls into a narrow plain at the coast. The province of Cabinda is an enclave within the bordering Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Congo.

While the north and the coast have a damp, tropical climate, central Angola sees dry and milder conditions. Towards Namibia, the south has a desert climate and becomes increasingly arid the closer it gets to the Namib Desert.

The dry, cool season lasts from May to October; from November to April, it is hot and rainy. The temperature varies only slightly between the seasons with the average annual temperature being 20°C / 68°F and the maximum 26°C / 79°F.

Visas / Embassies

All nationalities need to apply for a visa in advance in order to enter Angola. It is not possible to obtain a visa upon arrival. Ordinary visa allow you to stay for up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for at least another six months; they also need to have two blank pages left (one for the visa and one for entry and exit stamps). If you apply at an Angolan embassy in your country, allow at least two weeks since visa are only processed in Luanda. An international vaccination certificate is required for entry as well indicating yellow fever inoculation within the last ten years.

Money / Banks

1 Kwanza (AOA) = 100 Lwei

You can bring up to 1 000 Kwanza into Angola. If you are importing or exporting foreign currency worth more than 5 000 US$, you need to declare it. Note that you are not allowed to take Kwanza out of the country. Traveller Cheques are hardly accepted, and if the fees are high. Credit cards are also rarely accepted. Cash can best be exchanged at foreign exchange bureaus or banks. Please note that banks will only accept 100 US$ notes if they were printed in 1996 or thereafter.

There are four Angolan banks: Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA), Banco de Comercio e Industria (BCI), Banco de Poupanca e Credito (BPC), and Banco Africano de Investimentos (BAI). The foreign banks you will find in Angola are Banco Totta e Acores (BTA), Banco Portugues do Atlantico (BPA), Banco de Fomento e Exterior (BFE), and Equator Bank Limited. Citibank has also opened an affiliate office.

Banks are usually open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 15:00.
