The Kaokoveld covers some 77 000km2 in the arid north-western corner of Namibia, and one of the last remaining wilderness areas in Southern Africa.
The landscape is characterised by rugged mountain scenery, expansive gravel plains, sweeping river valleys and uniquely adapted fauna and flora.
Kaokoland is well known for its population of desert adapted elephants, black rhinos and occasionally groups of lions.

The Skeleton Coast is one of the most famed and feared stretches of coastline in the world.
Ghostly shipwrecks on remote and inaccessible shores has given the Skeleton Coast it's well-deserved name. More than a thousand vessels of various sizes and areas litter the coast.
Cool ocean air meets warm desert air, and nearly every morning, mists cover the coastline, bringing the life-sustaining moisture to the desert.
The landscape of the Skeleton Coast ranges from huge sand dunes to deep canyons and mountain ranges, whose slopes are covered by a variety of plants which have adapted to the environment.

The Skeleton Coast National Park is bounded by the Kunene River in the north (forming the natural border between Angola and Namibia) and the Ugab River in the south.
The Kunene River also boasts the spectacular Epupa Falls, which is one of the most beautiful regions in Namibia.
The capital of the Kaokoland region is a small town called Opuwo. The name Opuwo translates from the local Herero language into English as "the end".
|
The remote area south of the Kunene river is the home of the Himba people, who have kept their ethnic individuality and culture in the seclusion of Kaokoland.
They wear little clothing, but the women are famous for covering themselves with a mixture of butter fat, red ochre, and herbs to protect themselves from the sun.
The Himba are herdsmen, breeding mainly cattle and goats while leading a semi-nomadic life. They migrate with their herds to the different water holes from season to season.
