Henties Bay
Henties Bay is a coastal town in Namibia, situated along the National West Coast Recreation Area, about 440 km from Windhoek and 70 km north of Swakopmund.

It can be reached by the National B2 road from Windhoek and the D1918 district gravel road via Usakos and the Spitskoppe or the C34 salt road via Swakopmund.

The town was named after Major Hentie van der Merwe who discovered a freshwater fountain in the estuary of the Omaruru River during 1922 and whereto he returned year after year for his December holidays.  After a few years of camping he decided to build a plain wooden holiday shack.

People from the Kalkveld district, where Major van der Merwe lived, soon followed suit and eventually Henties Bay became the popular holiday town.  It is today with a population of about 2700 permanent inhabitants.

Like the Namib Desert the climate at the coast is extremely arid but temperatures are moderate due to the influence of the cold Benguela current, ranging from 13 to 18°C.  Fog is being brought in almost every night by onshore winds and the humidity is normally as high as 85% while the actual rainfall is less than 15 mm per year.  Temperatures can however soar to over 40ºC and even higher when the hot, dry east wind or Bergwind is blowing.  Ironically these winds occur in winter between April and August and although sometimes very hot, it provides glorious summer days and evenings.

Henties Bay is a popular holiday resort with shops, restaurants, pubs, banks, a post office, 24-hour petrol, 4x4 vehicle hire, garages, service stations and tow-in services, as well as medical services.

This small town has a peaceful, rustic atmosphere.  The absence of heavy traffic, the mild climate and long stretches of unspoilt beach creates the ideal setting for a leisurely holiday or a few days rest for the overseas visitor after a tiresome journey on hot and dusty roads.

Accommodation facilities include a hotel, bungalows and holiday flats, bed and breakfast establishments, a caravan park, backpackers' accommodation and self-catering facilities.  Various sport facilities are available to the public such as a nine-hole golf course, tennis and squash courts and a Jukskei court.

Due to the availability of fish such as galjoen, steenbras, kabeljou and blacktail, Henties Bay is a haven for fishermen with many accessible angling spots along the coastline.  Highly reputable and experienced angling tour guides offer daily or longer angling excursions, which can be booked in advance.  Excursions are planned according to the client's needs.

Henties Bay is a good base from where to explore the Namib Desert on day trips.  Some areas can easily be visited by means of self-drive trips with a sedan vehicle, although other areas are only reachable with a 4x4 vehicle.  Many of these excursions should preferably be undertaken with an experienced tour guide due to the lack of proper roads and directions.  Care should always be taken when driving on gravel roads and especially on the coastal road that is made of salt-gravel.  These roads can be very slippery during foggy conditions or after rain.  Desert excursions can be booked in advance and are planned according to the client's needs.
