Built in 1972, 100 km long and 374 square kilometres wide, the Gariep Dam is the largest in South Africa.
It attracts all water sport enthusiasts from anglers, sail and power boating, canoeing, skiing and much more.
This dam is part of the Orange River Project, the largest African irrigation project, which irrigates 22,400 hectares of land for agricultural use; and provides drinking water for the cities of Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth. |
On the northern shore lies an 11 237 hectare game reserve which accommodates the largest population of springbok in any reserve in the country and also features Cape mountain zebra, klipspringer, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and ostrich.
A mix of farming and outdoor life is central to the people of Springfontein. This town has many historical attractions dating back to the Anglo Boer War, these include a block house, concentration camp and grave yard among others.
