The tranquil atmosphere of the Northern Free State comes alive in the summer months with sunflowers; while sweet corn, wheat and grainlands are surrounded by the pastel colours of vast cosmos fields. Enroute the numerous hiking trails in this region are undamaged Bushmen rock paintings and the remains of kraals of the indigenous tribes that once inhabited this area.

Vaal Dam and inland regatta

The Vaal Dam is South Africa's largest dam and has its own island, almost 5km long, which hosts the "Round the Island" yacht race.

According to the Guinness Book of Records this yacht race is the world's largest inland regatta.

The dam hosts a number of other events including Keelboat week, the Bayshore 200km jetski race and the Bayshore Marine Vaal Dam Treasure Hunt.

The picturesque town of Parys on the Vaal River was once compared to the French city of Paris.

A magnificent visiting place with interesting walk-in shops and an art route. Madiba Africa is local high quality art available in this small rural tourism town.

Parys is the gateway to the Vredefort Dome, the oldest and largest meteorite structure in the world and a World Heritage Site.

Kroonstad is the third largest town in the Free State, located on the Vals River it draws many watersport and angling enthusiasts.

Two private game reserves in the area allow visitors the opportunity to go on game drives or hunting.

The town is also renown for the Festival of Lights held over the last 3 weeks of December.

Sasolburg was founded in the 50's with the establishment of Sasol. Although this is now an industrial region it is still very attractive and rustic.
