For at least nine months of every year Namaqualand is a dry and barren semi-desert stretching for 600 miles up the West Coast of South Africa.
From the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the small town of Pofadder in the east, north from the great Orange River and south beyond Vanhynsdorp, Namaqualand is known as “Big Sky Country”.

If you see this barren landscape in summer it is impossible to imagine the metamorphosis it undergoes between August and October, when the life giving rains transform this desert into a kaleidoscopic array of wild flowers.
The sight of the Namaqualand flowers brings thousands of tourists to South Africa’s shore every year.

The Ai Ai’s / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a hauntingly beautiful, seeming barren “rock desert”, that lies within South Africa and Namibia.
Although this arid region annually receives between 5 - 200 mm of rain it is home to the richest assortment of succulents in the world, including some that can’t be found anywhere else.
Some 185 bird species, leopards, lizards, and true adventurers call this park home. It is also home to the Nama herders who jointly manage the park.

Established in 1854 for the copper mining industry, Port Nolloth has received a new lease on life with the discovery of diamonds along the Namaqualand coast.
Port Nolloth is also popular for line fishing, has plenty of crayfish and is home to the only resort along the diamond coast. |

Springbok, once called Springbokfontein, because many Springboks used to roam the area.
Springbok was also founded on the basis of copper mining. Now highlights include the Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden, a copper mining shaft established by Simon van der Stel in 1685 and Goegap Nature Reserve where antelope such as springbok and gemsbok can be viewed. |
