The Southern Region in the Northwest Province has an infinite tapestry of green maize, yellow sunflower fields and bushveld plains dotted with wild olive and umbrella thorn trees.

This region borders the Freestate in the south and Gauteng in the west.

The Southern Region has amazing picnic spots, like the Buxton Quarry at Taung with its pristine spring winding through an ancient limestone valley.

Treasure Route

The thornveld country of the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve is a 12 000 ha conservancy in open Kalahari scrub, offering the visitor game viewing on the reserve, or fishing at one of the most popular angling sites in South Africa.

Created especially for the tourist is the Treasure Route, dedicated to providing the tourist with quality information and assistance.

It enters the Southern Region near Fochville, then follows the national road through Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp, before exiting again at Bloemhof.

Along the Treasure Route in the Vredefort / Parys area (120 kilometres south west of Johannesburg) is the Vredefort Dome, created by a massive meteorite, which struck the earth about three million years ago.

It is currently regarded as the biggest and oldest clearly visible impact structure on earth. It beats the Sudbury impact structure in Canada for this ranking.

Professor Dart and Potchefstroom

Other memorable sites in the Southern Region include the Taung Heritage Site where the skull of a child was unearthed in 1924.

This find by Professor Raymond Dart effectively underlined previous evidence that the origin of early man was indeed initiated on the African continent.

The city of Potchefstroom is only one hour's drive from Johannesburg and is the educational and sports hub of the North West Province. The gateway to the North West is also the provincial headquarters for 17 types of sports and has a university along with other educational institutions.

Its Agricultural Centre is currently the largest single agricultural service point on one terrain in Southern Africa.

The Southern Region is an outdoor adventurer's paradise offering anything from hiking trails, mountain biking trails and canoeing to white water rafting.

Those more daring can visit any of the award winning mampoer distilleries in the region. Mampoer is a popular South African liqueur well known for its very strong taste.

Between the wonderful picnic spots and cultural villages, this region will show its visitors just one more face of our beautiful and diverse country.
