What
makes Addo different
 |
It is said that all nature reserves
are different from each other and that they are thus all unique in some
way or another. The Addo National Park is definitely different from all
others and certainly stands alone in its difference.
This is a national park and that
label does confer on the park a certain status, that other nature conservation
areas do not receive, no matter how unfair this perception might be. An
example is the comment of a well travelled English woman who was well acquainted
with the big East African reserves in the fifties and sixties before the
poachers ran amok: "I suppose if it's a national park the elephants are
real and not brought in". |
| Addo is only 45 minutes from a conurbation
of well over a million people. The only national park to our knowledge
that is closer to a big city is Nairobi National Park in Kenya.
The park has a variety of ecosystems
and landscapes that make it different to all other Nature Conservation
areas. No where else does a national park include dune fields, semi desert,
plains, mountains, seashore and the sea itself, bushveld and fynbos, savannah
and montane and coastal forests. That is no where else on earth, and certainly
not in such a relatively circumscribed area. Thus the visitor has a greater
chance of seeing a greater variety of flora and fauna in a shorter time
than anywhere else in the world. |
 |
 |
Because Addo has mercifully not
been ravaged by poachers, the elephants do not have a fear of human beings
found in other large game reserves. The matriarchal families have not been
shattered and as a result, they are very calm. Thus the visitor can get
closer to a wild elephant in Addo in relative safety and comfort.
This is a wild area adjoining a valley
of great beauty and some intensive agriculture, where the human environment
compliments that of the natural environment. This enables the tourist to
have a wild life experience, and an agri tourism experience as well as
exploring an area with a long and fascinating history indulging in some
authentic African culture. The natural and the human environments do not
infringe on each other but rather, compliment themselves. |
| There is a wide variety of accommodation
available, ranging form self catering cabins to 5 star luxury. It is part
of the closest Big 5 natural areas to Cape Town and is the perfect place
to start or finish the Garden Route experience.
Addo National Park is free of flying
insect borne diseases - it is malaria free!
