Africa Adventure Travel News Map Botswana

The Central Kalahari (Kgalagadi in Setswana) in the heart of Botswana is characterized by vast open plains, saltpans and ancient riverbeds. Travellers to this area must be self-contained with all fuel, food and water and should only travel in groups of two or more 4x4 vehicles with basic spares and survival aids. Pass through the vibrant capital city, Gaborone, onto the Trans-Kalahari Highway which was an old cattle route and is now newly tarred and easily accessible in a normal vehicle. Journey into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park a large ecosystem relatively free from human interference with large herds of Oryx and the famous Kalahari lions. You may enter from either Botswana or South Africa and enjoy all the facilities this great park offers.

The Trans-Kalahari Highway is a 595 kilometre long road, which links the capitals of Botswana and Namibia. It serves as a strategic link in the Maputo-Walvis Bay economic Corridor.

Gemsbok or Oryx are large antelope of striking appearance with long, spearlike horns. They can survive days or even weeks without water.

The Shepherd's tree, with its white gnarled stem and dark green foliage, is often called the Tree of Life as it offers sustenance to both humans and animals.

A typical sight in the Kalahari, the Secretary bird is a long-legged grey and black bird with long, loose black feathers projecting behind the head.

Traditional beer, known as bojalwa ja Setswana, was not that potent. Since the "white man" has introduced sugar and yeast the brew has become stronger.
The wild or gemsbok cucumber is sought after as a water source by the people of the Kalahari. The fruit is often pickled and preserved in Old Cape kitchens. The Bushmen or San are indigenous to the Kalahari. They are known for their legendary ability to track animals and everything they own comes from nature.
