Africa Adventure Travel News Map Mozambique

From the chaos and poverty in the 70's and 80's, Maputo is slowly recreating some of its former glory. With its vibrant markets and street cafés, this city is full of character and African charm and the perfect place to start your journey of this incredible country. From Maputo, travel north-east to Inhambane, a city with a fascinating mix of old-world Portuguese and Muslim cultures. Here, you can sail silently and peacefully in a traditional Dhow with its unmistakable triangular sail. The local islanders will take you on a memorable journey where you might even catch a glimpse of an elusive dugong, or witness one of Africa's marvels - the magnificent sunset. Pass through Vilanculous en-route to a gateway in the sun - The Bazaruto Archipelago. This group of 5 islands off the coast of Mozambique is widely considered to be the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. The area offers stunning coral pink beaches, world class deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. In the 1970s the islands were declared a national park, with no roads, no shops and no major tourist attractions you are constantly surrounded by wall to wall natural beauty!

From the Editor

With a coastline of approximately 2500 km, edged with palm-fringed beaches, Mozambique is one of the most alluring destinations in the world. This amazing country was a Portuguese colony until 1975 when it gained its independence. Thereafter, a civil war raged from 1977 to 1992 but the friendly hard working people have restored the country to former glory making it a captivating idyllic playground in the sun. With strong Arabic and Portuguese influences mixed into African culture, great seafood and breathtaking beauty, Mozambique is bound to capture your soul!

Two of the most awarded beers in Africa: Laurentina Clara, a Pilsner, and Preta, a dark lager, are produced in Mozambique. 2M (pronounced dosh-em) is also popular.

Mozambican food has a strong Portuguese influence. Hot pepper sauce (peri-peri) provides much of the flavor, and the seafood - especially prawns - is excellent.

The marimba, a kind of xylophone that has been adopted in Western music, originated in Mozambique. The musical style is similar to calypso and reggae.
