Africa Adventure Travel News Map Cape Winelands

50 km from Cape Town, along the banks of the Eerste Rivier lies the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, capital of the Cape Winelands. Founded in 1685, it is South Africa's second oldest town with over 100 wine estates to choose from. Often referred to as "Eikestad" - town of oaks, the village is the epitome of Cape Dutch architecture, alive with students who attend the university. It is also part of the Western Cape Arts & Culture route with many art galleries and interesting shops.

Take a leisurely drive to Franschhoek, a quaint village dating back to 1688. It is home to some of South Africa's oldest vineyards and wine farms and still retains much of the early French Huguenot culture. A magical village, housing some of our finest restaurants, it is advisable to make reservations during the summer months (October - April). Many specialist stores grace the village centre and there is no shortage of excellent accommodation.

Onwards towards the little gem of Tulbagh, almost completely surrounded by spectacular mountains. Much of the town was damaged by an earthquake in 1969, however, in the famous Church Street, all the houses were lovingly restored to their original condition. The street is now graced by the largest number of original Cape-Dutch, Edwardian and Victorian National Monuments in one street in South Africa and is a major tourist attraction of the town to the present day.

Mainly nocturnal, the Cape Fox is silver-grey in colour with large pointed ears and a bushy tail. Remarkably agile, they prey on insects, mice and other small animals.

A tree with a rich history, the White Milkwood is a must for any coastal garden, with its dense foliage, black berries and small, dainty white flowers.

Endemic to the Southern Cape mountain slopes, the Cape Siskin feeds on seeds and insects off small plants. They live, either in pairs or in small flocks.
