In the heart of Zululand on South Africa's east coast, lies the
96 000 ha
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve.
Game viewing is the principal attraction,
with this low-risk malaria park
providing sightings of the Big Five, over 350 species of bird and a variety of other wildlife. The reserve has an ongoing protection plan of both the white and black rhinoceros.
South Africa's first declared Natural World Heritage Site, The
iSimangaliso (Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park
is home to Southern Africa's largest hippopotamus population and approx. 1,000 crocodiles. The park
encompasses an immense mosaic of ecosystems - swamps, lakes, beaches, coral reefs, wetlands, woodlands, coastal forests and grasslands - supporting an astounding diversity of animal, bird and marine life.
Lying on the coast in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal, surrounding the beautiful Kosi Bay lake system, is Kosi Bay Nature Reserve.
The 11 000 ha, 30km-long reserve is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water, marshland, swamp and coastal forests, home to an abundance of bird life.
The Kosi Bay lake system has long been regarded as the best-preserved large estuary system on South Africa's Indian Ocean coastline.

The Elephant Coast is named after the country's largest herd of indigenous African elephants that have lived in this region for centuries.
An extraordinary, untamed area fast growing in popularity, it is the only tourist destination in South Africa where in a single day, one has the opportunity to view the Big Five, snorkel or scuba-dive, explore the shores of southern Africa's largest fresh water lake, and visit the traditional home of the amaZulu, a proud nation descended from the Nguni people.
An astonishing variety of habitats gives rise to a multiplicity of fauna and flora, making the visitor realise why this area is regarded as the ecotourism mecca of South Africa!
