Between the Steenkampsberg and Mauchberg Mountain Ranges you will find the oldest town in Mpumalanga, Lydenberg (town of suffering),
so named after the many deaths of Voortrekkers at nearby Ohrighstad due to malaria.
The town has
a rich history which is associated with the Voortrekkers and the Anglo-Boer War.
Today, Lydenburg is known as more of a thriving agriculture and chrome and platinum mining centre.
Lying at an altitude of nearly 2,100 metres, Dullstroom has an abundance of water and rivers and is a very popular destination for trout anglers. The town also boasts a high altitude fitness centre - internationally prized by athletes needing to train at altitude.
There is a proliferation of bird life in the area and the Dullstroom Bird of Prey and Rehabilitation Center was established to promote an awareness of the plight of endangered raptor species.
Established on the farm "Geluk" (happiness) in 1894, the town of Machadadorp was named after Joachim Machado, the Portuguese engineer who first surveyed the railway route between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay. The town plays host to a highly successful annual festival
at the Machadodorp Fly Fishing Park and Camp Site where the Potjiekos and Fly Fishing Competitions are held, along with a Flea Market.
