Africa Adventure Travel News Map Gauteng

Born in the late 19th century with the discovery of gold, Johannesburg is an extraordinary city, full of opportunity. The main host city, of a total of nine host cities, for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Jozi" offers the visitor everything from huge shopping malls, fine dining, exciting nightlife and a diverse selection of accommodation.

The pretty city of Pretoria (Tshwane), has a long and fascinating history. Many significant old buildings line the streets and the Voortrekker Monument, built to honour the Voortrekkers (pioneers) is home to an informative and illustrative museum, offering magnificent panoramic views of the city and countryside.

A provincial government initiative to establish a premier tourist destination close to Gauteng's urban centres, the Dinokeng Region lies north-east of Pretoria and covers a massive area. A wide range of attractions, game reserves and activities will tempt even the most worldly of travellers.

Encompassing an incredible infrastructure, Gauteng has a population of over twelve million people, each bringing their own unique blend of energy and diversity into the region. Huge skyscrapers adorn the large cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria (Tshwane), while only 20 minutes away from the crowded cities with their interesting past, one is transported into the peaceful countryside offering a fascinating blend of nature and beauty. Dinokeng Region

The economic powerhouse of Africa, Johannesburg is the largest South African city. Often referred to as Egoli (City of Gold), remnants of gold mine dumps can be seen around the city.

Affectionately known as the Jacaranda city, Pretoria (Tshwane) is the administrative capital of our country. The historic Union Buildings form the official seat of government.

In African culture, river sources have sacred significance and their confluences hold healing powers. Dinokeng "a place of rivers", lies in the catchment area of two rivers.

Hadeda
A proudly South African carnivore, the Meerkat has a Lemur-like face and only four toes on each foot. They are very social mammals and live in large groups.

The Tree Wisteria is one of the most spectacular of our indigenous trees when in flower. Blue-mauve, fragrant flowers hang from the branches in bunches.

Members of the Ibis family, Hadedas have a long curved bill and a raucous call. Often found in urban parks and gardens, they feed on earth worms and snails.

Brandy, usually mixed with Coca-Cola, lays claim to the title of South Africa's favourite tipple, selling more than the white spirit and whisky markets combined.

Chakalaka is a popular, spicy, onion and tomato relish or sauce, not only served in shebeens (tavern), but also in five star game lodges and fine city hotels.

A feast for any culture buff, this area takes you through a multitude of museums, galleries and memorials each offering something quite unique and special.
