In the heart of the Garden Route, Wilderness is surrounded by a number of lakes, rivers and estuaries and the area offers great outdoor activities such as paragliding and canoeing. During the South African spring (from September to November), the surrounding lakes are carpeted in a blanket of flowers, further enhancing the verdant beauty of this natural wetland area.

Diverse in its environment and mix of people, Knysna has something for everyone, providing endless opportunity for leisure and outdoor adventure. Track the mysterious Knysna forest elephant, take a sunset yacht cruise or cycle in the beautiful forests. With a rich history, good restaurants, a picturesque waterfront including a yacht harbour and a variety of art and craft rambles, the options are never-ending.

Long stretches of sandy beaches, mighty mountain ranges and a beautiful peninsula make Plettenberg Bay the perfect destination for any traveller. Whether you chose to stroll along Robberg Beach with its Blue Flag status, discover the Robberg Nature Reserve or hike one of the many spectacular nature trails - this beautiful region will take your breath away. Plettenberg Bay is often referred to as the adventure capital of South Africa as it offers an abundance of outdoor activities. Go horse riding in the forest, take a boat trip to see whales (in season), dolphins and seals, jump from a bridge or ride a motorbike on deserted gravel roads. Relax at one of the many great restaurants sipping sundowners while enjoying an excellent meal - this captivating town offers everything of the best.

Arguably, one of the prettiest routes in South Africa, the Garden Route stretches from Mossel Bay in the West to the Tsitsikamma National Park in the East. Sandwiched between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and the Indian Ocean, the region is dotted with many interesting towns and endless stretches of white sandy beaches. Sports enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies will be captivated by the myriad of activities from great golf courses to the world's highest bungy jump from a bridge. Dramatic mountain scenery, indigenous fynbos and the warm hospitality of the people who live here will keep you coming back year after year!

Plettenberg Bay - Robberg Beach and Peninsula

Set between the Kaaimans River and the Goukamma Nature Reserve, Wilderness has a long stretch of white sandy beach, which unfolds against a backdrop of lush forest and lofty mountain ranges.

Derived from a Khoi word, the pretty town of Knysna is situated on a lagoon. The Heads, two sandstone cliffs at the end of the lagoon, form the entrance to the Indian Ocean, connecting the estuary with the sea.

Originally known as Bahia  Formosa - beautiful bay, Plettenberg Bay offers loads of sunshine, endless beaches and great accommodation. From game drives to skydiving, you are sure to be kept busy.

Malachite Kingfisher
Regarded as one of the most beautiful cats in the world, Caracals are sandy brown in colour with tufted black ears. They are mainly nocturnal, feeding on small mammals.

Gracing the many forests along the Garden Route, White Stinkwood is a beautiful indigenous, deciduous tree growing up to 25 metres tall.

A common species, found on reeds near slow moving water or ponds, the Malachite Kingfisher has regular perches or stands from which it fishes.
