Africa Adventure Travel News Map Okavango Chobe_Moremi

The Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta is a patchwork of lagoons, shallow flooded pans and plains as well as swamps and mopane forests. In the lush northern region of the reserve, one of Botswana's first safari camps, the Xakanaxa Camp (pronounced Ka-Kan-A-Ka) is situated in prime location on the banks of the Khwai River. This very well run, sophisticated bushcamp offers accommodation in 12 Meru-style tents, providing a true African safari feeling. Guests explore the region from the water or view the game and birdlife on land-based activities such as game drives and trips to nearby heronries (breeding grounds for herons).

Established in 1968, Botswana's first national park, the Chobe National Park, encompasses floodplains, swamps and woodland as well as dry hinterland in between. It is known for excellent bird watching and some of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent, such as cheetahs and hyenas as well as four of the Big 5 - buffalo, leopard, lion and approximately 120 000 head of elephant. Here, the Savute Safari Lodge provides elegant accommodation in thatched timber and glass chalets and boasts viewing decks, an al fresco dining area and a swimming pool overlooking the water hole for excellent game watching.

Close to Kasane, the air-conditioned, ensuite Chobe Game Lodge is situated on the mighty Chobe River in the North Eastern corner of Chobe National Park and offers a choice of land and water-based activities such as game drives, game viewing by small boats and sunset cruises. During the dry season (July to October) large herds of elephants, buffalos and antelopes congregate along the fertile flood plains of the Chobe River where they come to drink, bath and play.

From the Editor

This journey through the North of Botswana into the Okavango Delta, one of the most sought after wilderness destinations in the world, is like no other. Discover incredible game viewing in two of the best national parks in Africa. From the Moremi Game Reserve, where land and Delta meet to the Chobe National Park with its large populations of different game. Access to the parks is either by gravel and sand roads - a 4x4 is a requirement, except on a public tar road west of Kasane - or by air. Light aircraft are allowed to land on private airstrips of some lodges. There is an array of accommodation available, ranging from basic camps to luxury lodges. Prebooking is essential.

Pel's fishing owl

The Red Lechwe is a fleet-footed water-lover, skimming across wetlands and swamps with ease. This antelope also is a strong swimmer and will dive into water without hesitation if pursued.

Papyrus, a giant sedge, grows naturally in Africa. It forms tall stands of reed-like swamp vegetation and dominates with the willowy phoenix palm the Delta's perennial swamps.

The Pel's fishing owl lives in areas surrounding major river systems, such as the Okavango Delta. It feeds almost exclusively on fish but also occasionally catches young crocodiles.

Wayeyi dancer

The non-alcoholic home-made drink, Ginger beer, is a national favourite in Botswana and used a lot in big ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.

The Mopane worm is an important source of protein to millions of people in Southern Africa. They are dried in the sun and eaten boiled, cooked or deep-fried.

The Wayeyi people live in the Okavango Delta area of
the northern Kalahari. The flooding and receding of the Okavango River regulates their lives.
