Gorongosa National Park, situated in central Mozambique, consists of
savannah, woodlands, many rivers and rainforest and is home to an intriguing diversity of animals, birds and plants, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.
First constructed in 1941, Chitengo Safari Camp hosted thousands of visitors until 1983, when Mozambique’s civil war shut it down. Most of the camp was destroyed during the war but was re-opened in 1995 and restored to its former glory. Local experts on the park's flora and fauna treat the guests to early morning or sunset game drives and birding safaris.
Lake Urema is located in the south of the Gorongosa National Park. The Muaredzi River deposits sediments near the outlet of the lake slowing its drainage. This "plug" causes the Urema to greatly expand in the rainy season and the water backs up into the valley and out onto the plains supporting a great variety of wildlife.
Mount Gorongosa is a vital source of water for the park and home to many rare birds and plants. Guided trails up Mount Gorongosa allow one the opportunity to walk through diverse forest areas filled with cascading waterfalls and the view from the top is breathtaking.
