| Changes in Dialling Procedures in South Africa |
Local Calls
As of 16 January 2007, all numbers dialled within South Africa need to be preceded by the area dialling code, even when dialling from within the same area, making all numbers 10 digit numbers.
For example, currently if a call is made to Africa Adventure from anywhere on the Garden Route, the caller need only dial 533 52 11. However, in terms of the 10 digit dialling procedure the caller will need to dial the area code 044 and then the number 533 52 11 even if calling from within the Garden Route.
International Calls
No changes have been implemented for incoming international calls to South Africa, but the outgoing dialling code for international calls will be changed from 09 to 00. So, if dialling the UK the number will be prefixed by 00 44 and not 09 44.
These changes will be mandatory from 16 January 2007! From then on, if the area code is not dialled, the caller will be routed to an announcement which will request them to dial the 10 digit number when making local calls. The caller will be charged for the announcement. This will continue until 16 March 2007, after which the caller will receive a "number unavailable" tone. |
