Jackass Penguins get their name because they make a peculiar noise that resembles the sound made by a donkey braying.

Africa Adventure Travel News Map Namibia

Travel south from the capital city Windhoek, into the spectacular Fish River Canyon, arguably Namibia's most spectacular geological phenomenon. From here your journey takes you to the colonial style buildings in Lüderitz, a town which stands in isolation between the desert and the ocean. Continue your travels through the beautiful Namib-Naukluft Park with its great escarpment that separates the interior from the ocean to Sossusvlei, a clay pan set amid monumental piles of sand with star dunes!

From the Editor

Namibia's endless sunshine and scenic beauty make this diverse journey one of great reward. Through gorges and canyons travel west, into a ghost town to a city which has a curious "other-worldly" allure. For the more adventurous traveller, the rugged and often fog covered, terrain of the namib desert, allows you the freedom to explore the spirit of Africa!

Sossusvlei
With a depth of up to 550 m, the Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and one of the most impressive natural beauties in the southern part of Namibia. Lüderitz was built on a rocky hillside and ridge beside the bay. Outside the town limits, pass Kolmanskop, a ghost town, where diamonds were first mined in the Namib. Sossusvlei, Namibia's famous highlight in the heart of the Namib Desert, is a huge clay pan, enclosed by giant sand dunes, sometimes reaching heights of 300 meters.

Jackass Penguins
Nobody knows exactly where the legendary wild horses in Namibia originated from, but they are supposedly descendents from the German Schutztruppe.

Welwitschia Mirabilis rank among the top ten most bizarre plants on earth. A cone-bearing plant, this dwarf tree is found only in the Namib Desert.

Halifax Island, south west of Lüderitz, is home to a large colony of Jackass Penguins. This bird is endemic to Southern Africa and the only resident penguin.

Namibia Breweries Ltd, as part of its portfolio, produces a range of quality Schnaps under the Störtebeker name. The range includes fruity, herbal and clear schnaps.

Well worth sampling are the Lüderitz Oysters, available all year round. Present production is in the region of 125 metric tons annually, most of which are exported. The Nama people occupy the southern region of Namibia. Thought to be one of the oldest occupants of Namibia, they are closest in origin to the African Bushmen.
