Route: From the Ihaha Camp in the Chobe N. P. to Kasane, we could only get a ferry the next morning, so we left Botswana with the car and drove via Namibia to Zambia and onward to Livingstone.

Highlights:

Livingstone: White Water Rafting / Canoeing on the Zambezi River.

The town of Kasane sits at the meeting of four countries – Botswana, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe – and the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers. It’s also the gateway to Chobe National Park. Immediately to the east, the tiny settlement of Kazungula serves as the border crossing between Botswana and Zimbabwe, and the landing for the Kazungula ferry.
People throw themselves off bridges, jump off cliffs and half-drown in rapids just a stone’s throw away, but Livingstone lolls in sleepy contentment unfazed by the hype. It’s hard to believe this humble, dusty town is Africa’s adventure capital. Thousands of travellers come here each year for adrenalin pumping exhilaration and to stare at the mesmerizing Victoria Falls thundering into the depth of a narrow gorge. The waterfall, on the mighty Zambezi River, spans nearly 2km and drops dramatically over a 100m cliff. In a place where so many foreigners converge, Livingstone’s simplicity, in contrast to the magnificent falls, reminds us we are still in Africa.
The waterfall (Victoria Falls) is simply spectacular and must be seen, felt and heard to be understood as the experience can’t be captured in words.
Victoria Falls Aquarium (Tel. 40101; Livingstone Way; admission US$5; open 9.30am-5.30pm) is home to around 70 fish species from the Zambezi, including electric cat fish, eels and tiger fish. The aquarium is small but very nicely presented with a high roof, plants and 25 tanks. There’s a 200,000-litre tank waiting for a Zambezi shark, a species found close to the river mouth.
