Bartolomeu Dias Museum, South Africa When Bartolomeu Dias missed the tip of Africa more than 500 years ago you may have thought he'd missed the Point: but then he discovered Mossel Bay.

The dynamic Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex is a melting pot of cultures and history and offers you a wealth of places of historical interest as well as entertainment and a lot of information about the coastal town of Mossel Bay. By the way, this town has one of the best year-round climates in the world, second only to Hawaii!

The most famous place is possibly the Old Post Office Tree.  This massive milkwood tree - more than 500 years old - under which the early explorers left their important letters in an old shoe. This was the very first post office in South Africa. Post Office Tree
sailing ship A replica of Bartolomeu Dias' caravel was built for a commemorative voyage from Portugal in 1988 and is now on display at the Maritim Museum.

You can even walk inside this imposing wooden sailing vessel.

The largest shell museum in South Africa with its unique shell displays and marine aquariums is also found in Mossel Bay.  Come and have a look!  You can also visit our culture museum.

Visit us and make a fascinating journey through Mossel Bay's colourful past and enjoy the museum with one of the best views in the world.  A place where history comes alive in a spectacular setting with beautiful views of the ocean and the mountains.
