Johannesburg Zoo, South Africa

The "City of Gold" has a world of wildlife right on your doorstep. Johannesburg Zoo is notably the most popular public venue in the city with more than 2000 animals spread over an area of 54 hectares.

Established in 1904, our zoo has been the home of many colourful characters, like Max the crime-fighting gorilla who is now immortalised in a statue.

Johannesburg Zoo provides a recreational venue in a clean and green environment. On the grounds are many picnic spots and activities like ferry rides and the monthly Zoo Trot fun run.

Visitors can find out about our feeding timetables and watch as we feed polar bears, wild dogs and crocodiles.

From tours in buggies and fun fair rides to exhibits and museums, we are sure to have something enchanting for everyone.

Behind the scenes and Bella

Our zoo is also the epicentre for the "living sciences". Through behind the scene tours, night safaris and exhibitions we bring environmental subjects to life.

The "Zoo to You" project is a mobile zoo where you can meet Bella the cockatoo, as well as see snakes, hedgehogs, birds and many more.

Come on the Animal Mythbuster Tour and learn about hippos that sweat blood, bewitched owls and porcupines that shoot quills.

With seven function venues to choose from, guests are able to arrange high teas, cocktail parties and family gatherings next to the lake or high up on the ape house deck, amongst others.

A superb old stone building with a chapel in a peaceful setting provides a fairytale venue for a wedding.

Conferencing is a stylish affair, with a colonial style boardroom complimented by a wooden deck that overlooks the zoo's spectacular brown and white lions.
