The Centre for Dolphin Studies (CDS) is an internationally recognised, non-profit research institute, which was officially launched in 1990.

Evolving from a need to expand our knowledge of Western Indian Ocean, and in particular, Southern African, coastal and pelagic marine mammals, in light of the continued and increasing degradation of our environment.
Through a network of scientists and post-graduate students, the more than 30 research programmes undertaken by the CDS have contributed in excess of 145 publications to the scientific and popular literature. |  |

The main street centre provides an interpretative facility for local and international visitors, enabling them to discover more about whales and dolphins and the South African marine environment in general.
Although research is concentrated in the coastal zone and, broadly, encompasses the coastal ecosystem, the primary objective is the development of an internationally recognised research programme for the long-term study of the marine mammals of the Western Indian Ocean. In this context, studies of the following, for each individual species of marine mammal, are important. |
The most valuable assets of the CDS are the work and ideas of the scientists and institutions associated with it. Their combined expertise provides an excellent base from which the state of health of Western Indian Ocean marine mammal and associated assets can be assessed and monitored.
